August Vervynckt

August Vervynckt, 81, Redwood Rd., died of natural causes in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, at 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. For the past two years he has resided at the Catherine Kasper Life Center, Donaldson.
Family was the center of August’s life. He enjoyed his grandchildren, their sporting events and their various accomplishments and attended whenever he could.
A longtime area farmer, formerly of New Carlisle, Ind., August was born in South Bend on October 6, 1922. His parents were Achiel and Martha Taghone Vervynckt.
August attended South Bend schools. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and served as a medic in the 42nd AAF Base unit. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a corporal.
On October 11, 1947, August and Dorothy Van Driessche were married in South Bend. Dorothy died on October 25, 1986.
Self-employed doing the work that he thoroughly enjoyed, August worked for over 30 years on the family farm, retiring in 1978. August is survived by two sons and four daughters and their spouses. They are: Stephen A. and Brenda Vervynckt; James C. and Laura Vervynckt; Margaret A. Benway all of Plymouth; Martha E. and Jerry Huffer of Mexico; Susan M. and Brett Klingerman of Plymouth; and Arlene M. and Thomas Anderson, Pea Ridge, Ark.
Twenty-one grandchildren and six great grandchild also survive.
Preceding August in death are his parents, his wife and Jerry Benway, a son-in-law.
The family will welcome visitors on Monday, September 13, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A rosary will be said at 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial for August will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 600 N. Center St., Plymouth, where he was a member. The Reverend Edward Ssebbowa will officiate.
Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery where Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marshall County Post 1162 will conduct graveside services.
Memorial gifts in August’s memory may be made to St. Michael’s Church or school.
