Ben Sherwood

Benjamin Harrison “Ben” Sherwood, Jr., 88, of 13469 7th Road, Plymouth, died of natural causes in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 10:28 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2005.

Ben was born in Sedan, Indiana, on July 25, 1916. He was the son of Benjamin H. Sr. and Mae Rosetta Stoup Sherwood. He attended school until the 8th grade.

On November 16, 1939, in Plymouth, Ben and Margaret Ellen McQuisten were married.

A farmer, Ben raised dairy cows, hogs and chickens in Teegarden, Bourbon, Walkerton and Plymouth. He also worked at and retired from the Walkerton Elevator on November 11, 1986.

A hard worker on the farm, he helped his wife to raise their five children along with his stock. One neighbor said she “never saw a man chop a tree down with only one hand until Ben did it on 7th Road.”

Ben is survived by Margaret Ellen, his wife of 65 years, and their daughter and four sons, nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

His daughter is Mary Ellen Sherwood, Plymouth, and his sons are: Ronald D. and Laberta Sherwood and Kenneth and Rose Mary Sherwood, all of Bourbon; David L. and Darcia Sherwood, Walkerton, and Ed and Mary Louise Sherwood, Macomb, Ill.

Two sisters, Marjorie M. Sullivan, Plymouth, and Neva B. Fisher, Mishawaka, and a brother, Leland F. Sherwood, Abilene, Texas, survive as well.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ellsworth Sherwood.

Friends will be welcomed to celebrate Ben’s life with his family on Thursday, May 5, 2005, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services for Ben will be in the funeral home on Friday, May 6, 2005, at 1 p.m. John Birkey will officiate.

Burial will be in the Center-Polk Cemetery, LaPaz, Ind.
