Betty Jane Rimel, 93 passed away on Monday July 13, 2020 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth.
Born in Swanton, Ohio on March 29, 1927, Betty was the daughter of Earl and Edna (Drager) Casswell.
A graveside service will take place on Saturday August 15, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in the New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth, with Fr. John Korcsmar officiating. She graduated from Swanton High School with the class of 1945. Betty then became a registered nurse through the Maumee Valley nursing school in Toledo Ohio, graduating with the class of 1948. On July 18, 1949 she married Dr. James Rimel. Betty worked as an obstetrics nurse for Parkview Hospital in Plymouth. She proudly participated in the births of multiple generations of Plymouth residents. She would continue her education throughout her forty years spent as a nurse and would later receive an associate’s degree in general studies with Ancilla College. After she retired from the hospital, Betty served as a substitute school nurse for the Plymouth Public School system. Betty dedicated her time to civic engagement and served in many capacities: as a founding board member of the Blueberry Festival; a boy scout leader, and a bluebird leader; a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and a lector at mass; a Sunday school teacher; a member of the PEO; and a fifty-year member of the Tri-Kappa. Her town spirit showed at Plymouth High School sporting events of which she attended games well into her nineties. Betty was known as one the sweetest people that you would ever meet, and never let anyone go without a kiss on the cheek. Betty is survived by her children Jeffrey Matthew (Deborah) Rimel, Scott Allen (Susan) Rimel of Rowlett, Texas, and daughter Sue Ellen (Brian) Young of Barre, Massachusetts; sisters, Doris Denicola and Edwina (Harold) Cox; brother in-law Warden Rimel and sister in-law Joyce Metier. There are 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who survive.
She was recently preceded in death by her husband of seventy-one years Dr. James Rimel who passed in February 2020. They spent a lifetime full of love, generosity, travel, and adventure.
Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Alzheimer’s Association online at alz.org, or by mail 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Betty and Jim were such special people to our family. I remember when she pierced my ears at 13 and I was crying and my Mom said, “If she had another needle I would get it done tooâ€! And Betty said “I have plenty of needlesâ€! So Mom had to get her’s pierced first!! We all laughed so hard! She was at the hospital for the birth of my kids which was wonderful! My condolences to Jeff, Scott and Sue. She was so wonderful and always a hugger! We who knew her have been blessed!

I was so blessed to have grown up in my teen years as next door neighbor to Dr. Jim and Betty Rimel. They have three adorable children whom I used to sit for many years ago. I have so many fond memories and remember that I used to say that Betty look a lot like Lucille Ball. They gave so much to the Plymouth community over the years and were so respected. Heaven is a much richer place today having them both as lifetime residents. God bless the family with the peace of knowing that Betty is with her lifetime love and glorious Savior in Heaven. She is at peace for the first time in a long time.

Dear Sue, Scott and Jeff, Sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. The first time I saw your mother she was waiting to have photos taken at Olan Mills in Plymouth. She was sitting there with little Jeff on her lap. I thought she was so pretty. She remained photogenic all her life. I enjoyed being neighbors with her and Jim. Betty and I ran in the first (or second) Blueberry Race. I think we set a record that’s probably never been broken. (slowest) But we had a lot of laughs about it over the years. Take care. Love, Marie

Betty was a sweetheart for sure, always so caring, kind and full of compassion. She was a wonderful nurse taking great care of the patients. We knew her at St. Michael, too, where she was a dedicated example of faith. It’s good that she and the love of her life, Dr. Rimel are together again. They were both excellent role models. We send our prayers and sympathy to the Rimel family.
