D. Eugene DeMont, 77, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 30, 2024 at Holy Cross Village in Notre Dame. Born on November 17, 1946 in Plymouth, Gene was the son of George and Dorothy (Furry) DeMont.
Gene graduated Plymouth High School in the Class of 1965. Gene's musical talent led him to become a guitarist for the 1960s band, The Nomads, often playing at Centennial Park and various other venues in Northern Indiana.
He would go on to marry his sweetheart, Margo Taviner, in January of 1967 at Trinity United Methodist Church. A few months later, he would go off to bootcamp in the Army National Guard. While Gene was gentle by nature, he would defend those he loved and always looked out for his wife and daughters, Gwen and Brandi.
Holding a successful 35 year career as a Program Manager with The Associates, Gene retired around 2005. His career allowed him to travel across the United States and Europe fostering his and Margo’s passion for exploring new places.
Gene especially loved animals, nature, and spending time outdoors; an interest that continued through his involvement with the World Wildlife Fund and the Nature Conservancy. He was also an avid tennis player, runner, and gardener – starting an organic farm in his retirement. Gene's kind-hearted demeanor and laid-back personality left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Gene is survived by his wife, Margo; daughters, Gwen Calvert and Brandi (James Maure) DeMont; grandchildren, Kristin Calvert and Colin (Alexis) Calvert; siblings, Edwin (Sharon) DeMont and Suzanne (Mark) Umbaugh; along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
