Daniel Sam passed away on June 28, 2017 after a long illness. He was born June 17, 1928 in Gary, Indiana to Andrew and Flora Sam. He had nine siblings: John, Theodore, Andrew, George, Sophie, Flora, Joseph, Paul, and David. He graduated from Portage High School and attended Brigham Young University on a basketball scholarship. He was a successful business owner in Utah and long-time building contractor and land developer in Indiana, serving as Portage Building Commissioner and Merrillville Building Inspector until his retirement. He was a meticulous craftsman who loved fishing, spending time with his grandchildren, and traveling in Michigan with his eternal companion. A devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he held many leadership and temple callings. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra (Reed); four children; Debra (George) Mitchell of Powell, Ohio, Kandi (Bob) Kindmark of Chesterton, Indiana, Daniel Lee Sam of Draper, Utah, and David (Allison) Sam of Burleson, Texas; thirteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice Care. Following a private graveside service, internment will take place in Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
