Dorothy M. Balsley
November 21, 1928 — April 5, 2000
Dorothy M. Balsley, Lilac Road, Plymouth, died unexpectedly, of natural causes, on Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at 3:46 a.m. in Parkview Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She was 71 years old and had lived in Marshall County since 1968, coming from St. Joseph’s County.
Born November 21, 1928 in Mishawaka, she was the daughter of Irvin Arthur and Mary Morwiser Schrader. She graduated from Mishawaka High School with the class of 1945.
On June 24, 1950, Dorothy and Robert C. Balsley were married in South Bend. Robert preceded her in death on December 5, 1982.
Prior to becoming a homemaker and mother, Dorothy worked for the South Bend Bait Company.
Dorothy was an active member of the American Legion Ladies Auxillary, Lakeville Post #363 where she served as Chaplain the past 40 years. She was a charter member of the Walkerton American Legion Salon 8 et 40, #880, whose soul mission is to support the fight of disease in children.
Dorothy had a green thumb and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. In their early years, she and her children raised a vegetable garden together. She enjoyed crafts of all kinds.
She especially loved being with her grandchildren.
A son, Michael C. and Diana Balsley and a daughter, Connie A. and John Bottorff, both of LaPaz, survive their mother’s death.
Her five beloved grandchildren are all of LaPaz. They are: Kristy and Ryne Balsley, Robert, Heather and Travis Bottorff.
Helen M. Schrader, a sister-in-law, South Bend, and Wanda and Charles Nickels, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, North Liberty, also survive, together with two nieces and three nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and Arthur J. Schrader, a brother.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, April 7, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. John Perkinson, pastor of the Shiloh Wesleyan Church, and members of Salon #880, will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, April 8, 2000, at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Hospice.
