Edith E. Hawthorne

October 29, 1914 — June 26, 2006

Edith E. Hawthorne went to Heaven on June 26, 2006 at the age of 91. She has resided in Muncie since May of this year and died of natural causes on Monday at 6:20 a.m. in the Westminster Village. A former Marshall County resident, Edith has lived in the Avon Park/Sebring Florida area over the past 25 years.

Born on October 29, 1914 in Plymouth, she is the daughter of Samuel and Myrtle (Saupp) Davenport.

She is a 1932 graduate of LaPaz High School and received her teaching degree from Manchester College. She loved children and served as an elementary school teacher for many years in the communities of LaPaz, Walkerton and Lakeville in the Plymouth area, and Howard Elementary and Northwestern Elementary in Kokomo, until her retirement in the early 70’s.

Edith also enjoyed playing the organ, singing, various church activities, painting, bridge, traveling and playing golf.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years; William H. Hawthorne, whom she married on December 24, 1941. William died on March 14, 2004. Three brothers and threes sisters have also died, they are: Foster, George, Roland “Ted”, Hazel, Flossie and Nellie. Surviving are a son, William L Hawthorne and fiancée Barbara Angell of Crofton, Maryland and two daughters; Sue and husband Michael Felisky of Sebring and Merry and husband Robert Schwindt of Muncie. Seven grandchildren; Philip Durham, Lianne Foster, Michael Tarr, Denise Swalve, Bill Hawthorne, Ben Hawthorne and Elizabeth Braughton survive along with six great grandchildren and several special nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 29th in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. Plymouth, where calling will continue after 7 a.m. on Friday.

Services conducted by Randy Whitehead, Minister of the First Church of Christ, Mulberry Grove, Illinois will be held in the funeral home on Friday, June 30th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
