Elizabeth (Liz) Holub

July 12, 1944 - July 14, 2022

Elizabeth (Liz) Holub, 78, passed away on Thursday, July 14th, 2022 at the Catherine Kasper Life Center, Donaldson, IN. She was formerly a long-time resident of and small business owner in Cresco, Iowa.

Born on July 12, 1944 in Gary, Indiana she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Ligda) Shingler. She graduated from Ancilla Domini High School in Donaldson, IN and Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI. Early in her career she taught elementary school and later in life she enjoyed volunteering in the classroom. On June 13, 1970 she married Irvin L. Holub at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Gary, Indiana. They were married 45 years prior to his death.

Throughout her life Liz helped everyone and everything around her grow and blossom. As a nurturing mother to five children, she was loving and patient. Her family, children, and grandchildren were the focus of her life and her boundless love. She had an accepting nature and modeled her values and beliefs in her everyday living.

In 1975 Liz and Irv launched the small business that would eventually become Holub’s Greenhouse, Nursery & Flower Shop. As a self-taught florist and gardener, she had a creative spirit and shared the joy of a blooming flower, whether it be in her shop or in the wild.

They were active members of Notre Dame Catholic Parish in Cresco and in the Ministries of the Catherine Kasper Life Center in Donaldson. She had a deep and dedicated faith, leading classes in religious education and bible study.

Reading aloud to her grandchildren, sampling chocolates or tea, and taking long walks were among her favorite activities. She will be remembered for her generous, accepting, and loving spirit.

Liz is survived by four children: William (Michelle) Holub of Leo, IN; Lisa (Jeff) Kroll of Cedar Rapids, IA; Anthony (Susan) Holub of Chicago, IL; and Kristina Holub. Also surviving are her sisters: Sr. Mary Jo Shingler of Donaldson, IN; Joann (Larry) Willette of Buffalo, MN; brother-in-law Gerald Klich of Valparaiso, IN; and sister-in-law Carol Shingler of Hobart, IN. Her eight grandchildren are: Sydney, Jilian, Ronan, Alexander, Elizabeth, Michael, Olivia and David.

Liz was preceded in death by her husband, son David J. Holub, parents, brother John J. Shingler, and sister Claudia A. Klich.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 19th from 10-11am in the Catherine Kasper Chapel at Donaldson, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11am in the Chapel located at 9601 Union Road, Donaldson. Fr. Jerry Schweitzer will officiate.

A public visitation will held on Friday, July 22, 2022 from 1:30- 2:30 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 N Elm St, Cresco, IA 52136.

A graveside service will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial gift contributions may be made to the Catherine Kasper Life Center, PO Box 1 Donaldson, IN 46513
