Ernest Ellsworth Emmons

Ernest Ellsworth Emmons, 85, Oak Road, Plymouth, died suddenly of natural causes, at 10:24 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2004, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth after becoming ill at his home.
Ernie had been a Marshall County resident since 1951.
He had a love of family and a zest for life that will long be remembered.
He was born in LaPaz, Ind., the son of Sherman E. Sr. and Thelma C. Wright Emmons, on October 15, 1918. He graduated from LaPaz High School in 1937.
In World War II, he served in the United States Navy as a Motor Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class from 1944 to 1946.
He met his sweetheart, Isabel M. Moore of Nappanee at a Lake of the Woods dance and they were married on September 28, 1940 in Nappanee. They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in just over two weeks.
Ernie was first employed in the early 1940s with the Studebaker Motors assembly line prior to leaving for the service. After his return he worked for the company until they closed. He then worked for the Radio Furniture Mart and Able Service Company in refrigerator repair, both in South Bend, until his retirement in 1981.
An outdoorsman, he loved the game of golf, hunting, and fishing local lakes.
Ernie’s grandchildren were the loves of his life. He enjoyed doing yard work with his wife and was involved in many other activities that they routinely did together. For many years he was a league bowler in LaPaz.
A member of the Blissville Church of the Brethren since 1984, he served as an Elder and Deacon.
He also was a former active member of Moose Lodge 741. Ernie is survived by his wife and by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard A. and Diane Emmons, Granger. A grandson, Brian A. and Debbie Emmons, of Zionsville, Ind., and a granddaughter, Kristene M. and Robert Corbin of Indianapolis, survive as well, with five great-grandchildren; Peyton, Justin, Jessica, Sierra and Heather.
Four brothers include; Sherman E. Emmons, Jr., Bedford, Ind.; Dennis L. and Maggie Emmons, Plymouth; Lowell and Donella Emmons, LaPaz; and Guy K. Emmons, Rockville, Ind. along with two sisters; Wilma Wagoner-Renforth of Plymouth and Joyce Mutz of California Numerous nieces and nephews survive as well.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. They are Ward, David and Everett Emmons.
Visitors will be welcomed by the family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2004, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, Ind., and for one-hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Funeral services for Ernie will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2004, in the Blissville Church of the Brethren, 6250 Spruce Trail, Plymouth. The Rev. Jimmy Baker, pastor of the church, will officiate.
The V.F.W., Marshall Co. Post 1162, will honor Ernie’s service to his country, with graveside services at Fair Cemetery, North Liberty, Ind.
Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Blissville Church in Ernie’s memory.
