Evelyn G. Burroughs

August 8, 1909 - December 26, 2007

Evelyn G. Burroughs, 98, a lifelong resident of Marshall County, residing on W. Walnut St., Argos, Ind., died in the Culver Miller’s Merry Manor, at 5:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007. Evelyn had been in failing health since October of this year.
Born in Argos, Ind., on Aug. 8, 1909, Evelyn was the daughter of Willis Wright and Anna (Forsythe) Whisman.
She graduated from Argos High School with the class of 1927.
On Oct. 26, 1927, she and Ray David Burroughs were married in Niles, Mich. They honeymooned in Washington State. Ray died on Jan. 15, 1993, after 65 years together.
The couple owned and operated the Burroughs Insurance Agency of Argos for many years.
After raising their four children, Evelyn became a certified medical assistant at Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth where she retired after working for ten years.
She was dedicated to her family and her church, the Walnut Church of the Brethren, where she had been a member for over 80 years. She and Ray were deacons and served in various capacities.
Ray and Evelyn loved to fish in the northern lakes of Michigan and Wisconsin. For many years they spent alternate winters in Florida and California traveling the states in between.
She loved to bake pies and cookies. An avid reader, she also enjoyed working crossword puzzles.
She was a longtime member of the Marshall County Historical Society and the Walnut Twp. Home Economics Club.
Evelyn is survived by three daughters and a son. They are Connie Caldwell Lowe, Bradenton, Fla.: Susanna R. and Loren Carswell, Culver, Ind.: Mary and Richard Richey, Westminster, Calif., and Willis and Mary Sue Burroughs, Argos, Ind.
Thirteen grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one great-grandson, Michael Caldwell, two sisters: Ruth Harley Warner and Toilie McGriff and two sons-in-law: Fred Caldwell and Herbert Lowe.
The family will receive friends and share memories on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Robert Rice, pastor of the Walnut Church of the Brethren, Argos, Ind., will follow visitation at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.
A graveside burial service will take place in the Walnut Church Cemetery at the corner of Gumwood & 19th Roads on Monday at 11 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Memorial gifts may be made to the music department of the Walnut Church of the Brethren.
