Fern K. Dietl

December 14, 1914 — October 28, 2000

Lifetime Marshall County resident Fern K. Dietl, 85,of 15299 Muckshaw Rd., , died of natural causes at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000.  In failing health for the past three years Fern died in St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

Born in Marshall County at Rutlin, Ind., on Dec. 14, 1914, Fern was the daughter of William R. and Minnie Mae Nightlinger Smith.  She attended Oakdale, a one-room country school, and graduated from West High in 1931.

On Feb. 18, 1939, Fern and Sennett “Pete” Dietl were married in Plymouth.  Pete died on April 11, 1990.

Fern worked for twenty years at Price’s Abbattoir, processing and cutting meat.  Following the death of her husband, she enjoyed working for 8 years at McDonald’s until her health would not allow her to continue.

An active woman, Fern liked to bowl with the ‘girls’ on a team her husband sponsored; “Pete’s Angels”.  She was proud to say she played softball as a child on a local team known as the “River Rats”.  She always had pets, favoring dogs and cats.  Crocheting was a favorite pastime.  She made afgans for all of her family members.

She attended the Plymouth Community Fellowship of the Church of the Nazarene.

Fern is survived by two sons and a daughter, all of Plymouth.  They are John W. and Pam Dietl, Thomas L. Dietl and Elaine M. and Andrew Mora.

Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive also, together with Albert and Betty Smith, a brother and several nieces and nephews, all of Plymouth.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Russell Smith,  and two sisters, Mildred Lowry and Garibel Malicki.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services for Fern will be at 11:30 a.m on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, in the funeral home.  The Rev. Bill Huffer, pastor of the Harvest Fellowship of the Church of the Nazarene, Mishawaka, will officiate.

Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
