Floyd M. Houin

October 18, 1953 - January 21, 2021

Lifetime Plymouth farmer, Floyd M. Houin, 67, peacefully passed away at home surrounded in the love of his family at 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2021.

Born in Plymouth, Indiana on October 18, 1953, Floyd was the son of Elmer and Lena (Baker) Houin. He graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1972.

On August 7, 1976 in Goshen, Indiana Floyd married Debra (Hawkins) Houin.

Floyd and Dan purchased the family farm from their parents, Elmer and Lena Houin, in 1979. The 110 cows started what is now known as Homestead Dairy. The business has changed tremendously over the last 42 years, but he was always humble about his accomplishments. Floyd was extremely proud of the farm being recognized as one of the largest robotic dairies in the United States. Additional family members joined the farm to help his legacy continue.

If he was not on the farm, Floyd could be found on the golf course. His favorite vacation was a land and sea cruise throughout Alaska. The Alaskan experience was with his loving wife and other farmers.

He is survived by his loving wife, Debra, and children, Kristy (Joel) Gawronski of Plymouth and Brian (Jill) Houin of Argos; grandchildren: Quentin, Caleb and Trevor Gawronski and Jocelyn and Wyatt Houin Houin; and great-grandson, Weston Gawronski.

Floyd is also survived by his siblings: Donna (Kent) Mattix of Plymouth, Jeanette (Glendon) Becker of Argos, Virginia (Gary) Mechling of Bloomington, Linda (Kenneth) Nifong of Argos, Vern (Julie) Houin of Fremont, MI, Roland (Kathy) Houin of Bremen, Marlene (Daniel) Taiclet of Plymouth, Christopher (Anne) Houin; brother and sisters-in-law, Frances Houin, Rick Chesak and Tana Houin as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Dave, Susanna and Daniel.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 from 11-2p.m. at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth. Due to the restrictions, a private immediate family service will begin at 2 p.m. with Pastor Rick Davenport. For those unable to stay or attend due to restrictions, the service will be available via Zoom, which can be found in a link at the bottom of his obituary the day of his service.

Burial will follow in the New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

A Celebration of Floyd’s Life will be held the same evening, Tuesday, January 26, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. at the Homestead Dairy Shop on 13th Road in Plymouth.

Memorial contributions can be made to IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center c/o IU Foundation, PO Box 7072, Indianapolis, IN 46207-7072

PLEASE NOTE: For your protection, the entire funeral home staff will wear masks. It is mandated that family members and their guests do so as well.

Floyd Houin Wasn’t just a good neighbor, he was one of the very few men that I know who is not just a good friend a good neighbor, but when he said something his word was good. That is the true measure of a real man. When my brother and me had a problem Floyd answer the call. This is what a man, Neighbor and a true human being is all about. May God bless his family thank you

    To all the Houin Family,
Don and I send our most heartfelt condolences. We got to know Floyd when he and the boys would come to play golf at the Tri-Way. Although Jeanette was my classmate, I got to know Floyd through golf. Such a nice man, amazing father, and even more amazing business man. They say God only takes the best! He took a good one this time. May all your good memories console you at this difficult time.

My deepest condolences to all of the Houin family. May healing take over to bring all of you peace in this troubling time. Much love to all of you.

Floyd was a great man. I don’t think there was anything he couldn’t do. He was both a thinker and a doer which is a rare thing in this world. I have nothing but respect for him. He will be greatly missed.

Deb, I was so sorry to see that your husband passed away. We rented your home in Florida about 3 years ago and you had told me he was ill. My husband also passed away last August. He went into the hospital in November, 2019 for a surgery that was supposed to have him home in about 14 days and had complications so he was in the hospital 9 months and passed away. You will be in my prayers. God Bless You.

I will miss Floyd very much, as young kids we would spent our Sunday afternoons playing some kind of ball, softball football or basketball. Though’s day seem like yesterday. Diane and I really enjoyed all the trips with both of you. I still remember the time Floyd caught the Salmon with his hands in Alaska. The trip to Hawaii was gorgeous. In Germany he struggled because of his treatments but rarely said anything. Golfing in Arizona, and the Dominican Republic was a must, as a matter of fact GOLFING was a must about anywhere he went.
He was a very respected man by both his family and the community he lived in, his legacy will be in your family for generations. Our prayers are with all of you.

To the Houin family…Carol and I have felt a part of the Houin family from the day we met Floyd and Deb. We have been friends with Donna and Kent and Linda and Kenny of Bay Lake too. Floyd was genuine, sincere, caring, intelligent, and wholesome and down to earth. He is sitting next to Jesus along with his sister Suzy and brother Dan guiding the rest of the crew. We will always love and care for the Houin family and Floyd’s beloved wife Deb.
