Lifetime area resident and farmer, Fred M. Berger, 8920 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, died, following an illness, on Friday, Dec. 15, 2000.  Fred, 82-years old, died in Community Hospital of Bremen at 9:35 p.m. under the loving care of his family and the Marshall County Hospice.

Born on Jan. 29, 1918, in Bremen, Fred was the son of Clem D. And Rose Clark Berger.  He graduated from LaPaz High School in the class of 1936.

On June 28, 1941, in Nappanee, Ind., Fred and Treva L. Barts were married.  Treva died on Oct. 16, 1990.

In addition to farming, for many years Fred also had dairy cows. As a tradition, every Friday and Sunday night for years, he and Treva played cards with family and friends.  He continued the practice after her death.

A member of the R.E.M.C. Board of Directors for years, he also was a DeKalb Seed Corn dealer for fifty years.

Fred was an avid horseshoe pitcher.  In his younger days he loved to bowl and has many trophies for his accomplishments. He and Treva enjoyed traveling.   Fred was an avid note keeper, and kept a diary and a journal.

Fred is survived by two sons, Keith and Beth Berger and Brian Berger, all of Bremen.  Eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren also survive together with Carl D. And Edna Berger, a brother, of South Bend and Leona Ertel, a close friend of New Lebanon, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Treva, and two brothers, Richard C. And Damon Berger.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Services in the funeral home will be officiated by the Rev. John Perkinson, pastor of the Shiloh Wesleyan Church, where Fred had attended, on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind.

Memorial gifts in Fred’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Hospice.
