George B. Demont

War Veteran, civic leader and outstanding citizen, George B. DeMont has died. The 83-year-old lifetime area resident died of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s related illnesses at 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Center. He lived at 2211 Hillcrest Ave., Plymouth.
Born on Jan. 13, 1917, in Rochester, George was the son of Earl G. And Alta Carrie Jordon DeMont. He graduated from Argos High School.
On April 28,1940, George and Dorothy M. Furry were married in Plymouth.
Three years later, during W.W. II, George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served three years in the South Pacific, earning three Bronze Stars for meritorious service in campaigns on Iwo Jima, Guadacanal, the Marinas and in Japan. He was a Corporal in C Company, 6th Battalion, V.A.C.
George worked as an electrician for NIPSCO for thirty-three years. He retired in 1974.
A Boy Scout leader, he enjoyed playing golf in the NIPSCO league and visiting with his friends in area nursing homes. He liked gardening and enjoyed being with his grandchildren.
An outstanding athlete, George was a softball pitcher on the Coca-Cola Team. In 1938 he had a great season playing with locals such as Whitesell, Yoder, Kain, Willie and “Sac” Hampton and J. Cook. He pitched against the World’s Champion Softball Team when they played against the Plymouth All-Stars that year.
In 1940 and ‘41, he pitched the United Brethren Sunday School team into a tie for first place in the B League.
George is survived by his spouse, their two sons and a daughter: Edwin G. and Sharon DeMont, D. Eugene and Margo DeMont, all of Plymouth and Suzanne R. and Mark Umbaugh, Argos.
Nine grandchildren also survive. They are: Gwen Calvert, Jennifer Kingston, Brandan, Michael, Daniel and Christopher DeMont, Jeffrey, Jeremy and Joshua Umbaugh.
Two sisters, Nellie Miller, Port Huron, Mich., and Mary McCracken, Indianapolis, also survived together with five great-grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Norman and Wayne DeMont, three infant siblings and Velma Carpenter, a half-sister.
Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for George will be in the funeral home at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3, 2000. The Rev. Maurice C. Grindle, pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church where George served as a teacher, trustee and superintendent, will officiate.
Military graveside services will be held in New Oakhill Cemetery.
Memorial gifts in George’s memory may be made to the Plymouth Youth Softball League, the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.
