George W. Schroll, Sr.
November 16, 1921 — October 25, 2000
George W. Schroll, Sr., 78, died unexpectedly of natural causes at his residence, 609 Beerenbrook Ave., on Wednesday, October 25, 2000, at 2:52 p.m. George had been a resident of Plymouth since 1949 coming from Marion, Ohio.
He was born in Marion on November 16, 1921, the son of Wilson H. And Elsie Schroll. He attended school in Marion.
A decorated hero having been awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star in Bitchie, France, George served in the Infantry of the United States Army from June 17, 1942 to December 9, 1945. He was a member of the Plymouth V.F.W. # 1162.
A little over a year later, on December 22, 1946, in Marion, George married his wife Georgia. Georgia died on October 14, 1983.
He was a truck driver most of his life. He drove for Studebaker and worked for Geunter as a livestock hauler. He also worked for E&H Utility, supplier of fire hydrants, pipelines for city utilities. He was the Plymouth manager of E&H for 10 years until his retirement in 1984. Later he drove for George Holzwart Motors and was a Real Services delivery person.
In the late 50s and early 60s, George was a Plymouth volunteer firefighter.
He loved fishing and enjoyed seeking bluegill in Pretty Lake. He liked to play poker and go mushrooming. He enjoyed and appreciated country music and dancing.
He didn’t know a stranger. A very friendly and even-tempered man he bartended at the Eagles and belonged to the Moose Lodge 741.
George is survived by a son and a daughter: George W. Schroll Jr., Bremen, and Kathy A. and Gary Sickmiller, Plymouth.
Heather Sickmiller, Bloomington, a granddaughter, and two grandsons, Jeremy Sickmiller, South Bend and Adam Sickmiller, Plymouth, also survive together with three brothers: Daniel Schroll, LaRue, Ohio, Robert Schroll, Bellview, Florida and Dave Schroll, Phoenix, Arizona. Two sisters also survive. They are: Mary Blevins, Prospect, Ohio and Ann Toombs, Marion, Ohio.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his spouse and thirteen brothers and sisters.
Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, October 28, 2000, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church will be in the funeral home at 2 p.m. following visitation.
The V.F.W., Marshall County Post 1162 will provide full military honors in a graveside ceremony in New Oakhill Cemetery.
Memorial gifts in George’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Humane Society.
