Grace B. Gaines

December 26, 1917 — October 9, 2000

A Plymouth resident most of her life, Grace B. Gaines, 82, died of natural causes at 9:20 a.m. on Monday, October 9, 2000, in Miller’s Merry Manor, 600 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth.

Born in LaPorte, Indiana, on December 26, 1917, she was the daughter of Orphus Ray and Elizabeth Ellen Watkins Sutherlin.  She attended Plymouth schools.

On January 2, 1935, in Plymouth, Grace and James O. Gaines were married.  James died on June 20, 1970.

A homemaker, Grace had worked for Bergman’s Laundry for ten years.

She loved to cook for her family and enjoyed preparing meals for family dinners.  She was an avid gardener and enjoyed singing.

She was a member of the Plymouth Baptist Church and enjoyed attending services.

She is survived by six daughters and three sons.  Her daughters are: Loretta and Arlie Keehn, Walkerton, Violet and Robert Ray, Kewanna, Brenda Kay Carter, Argos and Shirley DeBow, Elizabeth Ward and Barbara and George Dickson, all of Plymouth.

Her sons are: Richard W. and Diane Gaines, Orlando, Florida, Roger A. and Denise Gaines, Plymouth and Joseph L. and Janet Gaines, LaPaz.

Also surviving are: a half-brother, Harvey Gaines, Jr., Plymouth, a sister, Esther Van Blaricom, Plymouth, and two half-sisters, Luethisia Hielman and Pauline Atkins, both of Plymouth.

Thirty-three grandchildren, forty-two great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Caroline Kitts and an infant daughter, Evelyn June.  A sister, Ethel Watkins and a brother, Dean Sutherlin, also preceded her in death.

Visitation with the family will be in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., on Thursday, October 12, 2000, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be in the funeral home at 10 o’clock a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2000.

Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
