Harold L. Bachtel

Harold L. Bachtel, 79, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home on Thursday, March 30, 2017.

Harold was born June 23, 1937 in LaPaz, Indiana, to the late John W. and Alma (Baughman) Bachtel.

He graduated from LaPaz High School in 1955. Harold married Phyllis J. Filson on October 4, 1959 in Inwood, Indiana; and she survives.

He was a long-time grain farmer and dairy farmer. He started farming when he was fourteen years old. He and Phyllis have been farming where they lived since 1961. He enjoyed being outside working in the shop, in the fields, maintaining the dairy herd and mowing grass. For over thirty years he collected Farmall and International tractors and still has thirty-five plus at the farm. He attended New Song Community Church. Surviving is his wife; Phyllis Bachtel of Plymouth, his children; Jane (Bill) Woodring, Judy (Rex) Young, Karen (Doug) McCartney, Ken (Michelle) Bachtel, Mike (Connie) Bachtel, John (Melissa) Bachtel, and Bob Bachtel; seventeen grandchildren; Brian (Heather) Tuttle, Melissa (Kevin) Hendrix, Danielle (Josh) Volkert, Jason (Jamie) Brown, Josh (Stacy) Brown, Leah Young, Adam (Andrea) McCartney, Kristi McCartney, Rachel McCartney, Kenny (Alicia) Bachtel, Mitchell Bachtel, Aaron (Dani) Bachtel, Austin Bachtel, Kendra Bachtel, Bryce Bachtel, and L & J, six step-grandchildren; Stacey, Chad, Steven, Stephanie, Brandon and Stacy, nineteen great-grandchildren and ten step great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his six siblings; David (Marge) Bachtel of LaPaz, Carl (Pat) Bachtel of Walkerton, Dorothy (Bill) Spier of Mishawaka, Margaret (Ben) Smith of LaPaz, Sharon Scott of North Liberty and Marilyn (Wayne) Ayers of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother; Donald Bachtel, three sisters; Esther Kovach, Glenna Disher and Norma Bachtel, and two granddaughters; Amber Bachtel and Jennifer Young. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 4-7 PM, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 North Michigan Street, Plymouth.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the funeral home, with Rev. Lowell Ott and Pastor Nick Stanton officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
