J. Dale Kreighbaum

August 23, 1921 — November 9, 2006

J. Dale Kreighbaum, 85, a Plymouth area resident for all of his life, died, following an extended illness, in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Center, Plymouth, at 12:10 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2006.

Born in Plymouth on August 23, 1921, Dale was the son of Archie Ray and Irene Ringer Kreighbaum.

He attended Culver and Plymouth schools.

Dale served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Drafted in August of 1942, he served with the 40th Division, 213th Field Artillery. His combat unit was headed for Japan when Dale was sent back to the states to resume farming after his uncle had been seriously injured in a fall.

On March 26, 1944, in Plymouth, Dale and Melba Jane Miller were married.

He was a farmer and also worked for two years with Carpenters Union 413 out of South Bend before taking a job at Young Door as a millwright for 20 years. He also worked at McCord’s-Cummins, retiring in 1986 after nine years.

Dale liked fishing and boating and he and his wife enjoyed traveling together.

He was the only male quilter in the Missionary Circle at Sunrise Chapel, making quilts for orphans in Honduras and Bolivia for nearly fifty years.

He had learned how to sew as a youngster at his mother’s knee while she operated their treadle machine. He also learned how to crochet, embroider, tat, knit and cook.

A charter member of Sunrise Chapel, Dale also was a member of the Plymouth American Legion Post 27 and the VFW, Marshall County Post 1162.

Dale is survived by Melba Jane, his devoted wife of 61 years and by their two sons and daughters-in-law: Dennis and Becky Kreighbaum, Shelbyville, Indiana, and Merlin and Darlene Kreighbaum, Plymouth.

Two grandsons also survive: Jeremy Kreighbaum, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and J.D. Kreighbaum, of Silvis, Illinois, formerly of Plymouth.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Violet Gottschalk and three brothers: Ray, Arthur and Joe Kreighbaum.

Friends are invited to celebrate the life of this remarkable man, a dedicated Christian since he professed his faith at the age of nine-years-old, with his family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2006, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and Monday at Sunrise Chapel, 1 hour prior to the services..

Funeral service for Dale will be held in the Sunrise Chapel, 11802 Lincoln Highway, Plymouth, on Monday, November 13, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Rustin Krapfl and the Rev. Bob Byler will officiate.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos, Indiana.
