James W. Rice, Sr.

June 16, 1914 — January 5, 2000

James W. Rice, Sr., 85, 11492 King Road, Plymouth, a resident of Marshall County since 1950, died, following a recent stroke, at 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2000, in St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

Jim was born on June 16, 1914, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., the son of William and Ida Dahlman Rice.  He graduated from Rolling Prairie High School.  A fine athlete, he was involved in basketball and track.

During World War II, Jim was a Technical Sergeant in the United States Army.

On September 16, 1950, he and Cleamontina “Tina” Hoover were married in Argos, Ind.  Tina died on January 14, 1988.

A former member of the Marshall County Posse, Jim was a farmer and a self-employed farm equipment repairman.

He loved farming and being outside.  Working with his hands was the joy of his life.  He enjoyed camping and had developed a renewed interest in the game of golf.  Mostly, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and his friends as the restaurant.

Jim attended the Plymouth Missionary Church.

He is survived by his son, James W. and Amy Rice, Jr., Mishawaka and his daughter: Catherine J. and Bob Hoover, Portage, Ind. Five granddaughters and a great-granddaughter also survive.  They are: Janel Wallace and her daughter Sage, Mishawaka, Melanie Wallace, South Bend, Desiree Gordon, Portage, Lauren and Whitney Rice, both of Mishawaka.

His parents, his wife and two brothers, Glenn Rice and Robert Rice, Sr., preceded Jim in death.

Friends may visit with Jim’s family on Friday, January 7, 2000,  from 3 to 8 p.m., E.S.T., at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

The funeral, conducted by the Rev. Robert Rice, Jr., pastor of the Milford Church of the Brethren, will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, January 8, 2000, at 11 a.m., E.S.T.

Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Plymouth V.F.W.

Memorial gifts may be made in Jim’s memory to the Marshall County Hospice.
