Janice L. Vander Velde

Janice L. Vander Velde, 86, was called home to the Lord on Monday, May 25, 2026 in Plymouth, Indiana. Born on January 13, 1940 in Chicago, Jan was the daughter of Harry and Anne (Builthuis) Boerema.

Janice met her high school sweetheart, James Vander Velde, while attending Timothy Christian High School. They were united in marriage on December 19, 1958, and shared 57 wonderful years together until Jim’s passing on March 4, 2016. Throughout her life, Janice held various roles, including working at Sunbeam and serving as a bank teller with Tri-City Savings and Loan and St. Paul Federal Savings.

Family was the cornerstone of Jan’s life. She lovingly raised four children: David, Debra, Denise, and Diane. Her joy grew with the arrival of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, of whom she was very proud. Janice treasured hearing about all their accomplishments and the lives they were building.

Known for her compassion, love, and humility, Janice demonstrated these qualities daily. Together with Jim, she opened their home as foster parents to nearly 50 children, sharing their values and warmth with many young lives.

Those who knew Jan also knew she was faithful. As a founding member of Crossroads Church in Plymouth, she contributed by helping with Bible study and offering counsel to many over the years. She took part in several mission trips and traveled extensively in their motorhome to support families in need across the United States.

Janice is survived by her children, David (Mary) Vander Velde, Debra Tuma, Denise (Michael) Cassidy, and Diane (Daniel) Barak; her beloved grandchildren, Matthew Tuma, Kristin (Christopher) Erfurth, Kimberlee (Daniel) Beckstrom, David (Jenna) Vander Velde, Jennifer (Mark) Laabs, Michelle (Jason) Moss, Justin (Sarah) Barak, Kyle (Esther) Cassidy, and Ashley (Matthew) Trabaris; her eighteen great-grandchildren; brother, Roger (Leona) Boerema; along with many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Anne Boerema; husband, Jim Vander Velde; brother, George Boerema; son-in-law, Glen Tuma Jr.; and great-grandson, Ryan Laabs.

Jan will be laid to rest at a private ceremony at New Oakhill Cemetery, 1300 Chester Street, Plymouth, IN 46563.
