Jeanne P. Skahill

August 8, 1915 — November 19, 2000

Jeanne P. Skahill, 85, died of natural causes, following a sudden illness at 8 a.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2000, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.  Jeanne was a resident in the Orchard Wing at Miller’s Merry Manor, 600 Oakhill Avenue, coming from Venice, Florida, in May of 1997.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 8, 1915, the daughter of John E.  and Ella Westernacher Hirten Sr.  She attended Valley Stream Long Island, N.Y. schools.

On October 23, 1938, in Valley Stream, she and John J. Skahill were married.  John died on February 25, 1994.

A homemaker, she loved working crossword puzzles, playing card games of all kinds, golf, bowling and gardening.

A member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Jeanne was a former member of  Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Venice where she was active in the Altar Rosary.  Jeanne had been quite involved with the social group at her residence community of Southwood in Venice.

She is survived by her four children: two daughters and two sons and nine grandchildren.  The daughters are: Judith F. Katz of Chico, CA and her children, Kevin and Brian; Joan M. and Larry Miller of Plymouth and their children, Carrie Tharp, Theresa Pacilio, Erin Listenberger and Christopher Miller.

Jeanne’s sons are John J. and Pricilla Skahill Jr. of Cumming, Georgia and their children, Jennifer and Jeffery;  James J. Skahill of Chico, CA and daughter, Lisa Skahill.

Eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Two brothers, John E. and Mina Hirten, Jr., San Francisco, Calif., and Robert and Gladys Hirten, Bellmore, Long Island, New York, also survive, together with a sister, Ruth Farthing, New Hope, Penn.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2000, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.  A rosary led by Fr. Expedito Muwonge will be said following visitation at 7 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2000, in St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 612 N. Center St., Plymouth.  Father Anthony Gillespie will celebrate the Mass.

Cremation will take place and her ashes interred at Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Garden, Venice, Florida.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Michael’s Mission 2000 or to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Venice.
