Julia Ann Umbaugh

August 31, 1925 — December 22, 2022

Julia Ann Umbaugh, 97, a lifetime resident of Marshall County, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at Autumn Trace Assisted Living, Plymouth.

Born on August 31, 1925 in Bourbon, Indiana she was the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Ames) Hanes. She attended Bourbon High School graduating with the class of 1942. On May 19, 1946 she married Hugh Umbaugh, they shared 60 years of wonderful marriage. Hugh preceded her in death on July 13, 2006.  During their time together they went on fishing trips with family and friends, spent many winters in Avon Park, FL and took numerous bus trips across much of the United States.

Julia spent all of her childhood and most of her adult life on the farm.  She looked forward to gardening, especially her strawberry patch and flower garden.

Julia was known to have a sweet tooth and enjoyed baking and making her homemade chicken and noodles for the holidays.  She liked to crochet and share what she made.

She belonged Argos United Methodist Church and the Walnut Ruralettes club.

She is survived by her son Jan (Nancy) Umbaugh of Land O’ Lakes, FL; daughters: Marcia (Brent) Dowell of Elkhart; Susie (David) Chamberlin of Plymouth; brother Ralph “Bud” Hanes Jr. of NY; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Julia is preceded in death by her parents, husband Hugh, siblings: Helen Neidigh, Maxine Hayes, Dorothy Swank, Martha Rusher, Barbara Rogers, and Carol Hunt.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2022 from 11-1 pm at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth. Funeral services will immediately follow with Chaplain Bob Puhr with Hospice Traditions officiating.

Burial will take place in the New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Trace for their compassionate care.
