Mabel M. Davenport

Mabel M. Davenport, a Marshall County resident most of her life, died of natural causes in Pilgrim Manor, 222 Parkview St., Plymouth, at 4:25 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002. She would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Nov. 21, having been born in Elkhart County in 1902. She was the daughter of Charles and Flora Ellen Crone Buss. She attended Pine Creek School. On Jan. 26, 1923, in South Bend, Mabel and George Davenport, Sr. were married. George died on Jan. 1, 1969. Mabel continued to live on their farm on Lilac Road until 1986. A farm homemaker, she assisted with the farming duties, raised her family and served as a “Pink Lady” with Parkview Hospital for 39 years. She enjoyed playing the piano, card games with friends and being with her family and friends. Mabel was a 35-year member of the North Twp. Women’s Auxiliary and was very active in the community. For over 15 years she sang in the Marshall County Extension Chorus, was a member of the Happy homemaker Club of LaPaz and was an enthusiastic part of the LaPaz Women’s Bowling League. She is survived by a daughter, Deloris Lemler, Ft. Worth, Texas, and a son, George (Paula) Davenport, Jr., Avon Park, Florida, five grandchildren, Rick (Mickey) Davenport, Plymouth, IN, Jodi Graverson, Overland Park, Kansas, Kim (Ken) Horvath, Charlotte, North Carolina, Phillip (Mary Ann) Lemler, Durango, Colorado, Denise (Charles) Blume, Indianapolis, Indiana, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive her death. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, George Sr., her spouse, and four sisters: Grace McIntire, Cecile Davenport, Dora Naragon and Mary Gardner. Three brothers: Delbert and Harold Buss and an infant brother, also preceded her in death. A son-in-law, Everett Lemler, has also died. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Plymouth Church of the Brethren, of which she was a long-time member, 1130 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. The Rev. Dave Kerkove will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts may be made to the Plymouth Church of the Brethren in Mabel’s memory.
