Marguerite LaPlante

April 27, 1934 - June 21, 2023

Marguerite LaPlante passed away peacefully on June 21, 2023, in Saint-Jèrôme, Quebec, Canada. Born Marguerite Marie Lea LeBlanc on April 27, 1934, in Moncton, New Brunswick to parents Edouard and Lea (Drisdelle) LeBlanc, she was 1 of 13 children. At the age of 9, Marguerite contracted polio and was told she would never walk again, never have children, or live to see the age of 21. Defying all the odds, she was able to walk on her own 3 months after her diagnosis and told her mom to call the doctor and tell him “he doesn’t know what he’s talking about”.

Marguerite graduated from Notre Dame D’acadia in Moncton in 1954 and worked for Remington Rand after graduation. She married the love of her life, Jerry LaPlante, on July 7, 1956, after he proposed on their second date. They were married 45 years until his passing in 2001. They lived in Montreal; Chicago; and Michigan, before settling in Plymouth, Indiana in 1974, where she would eventually work in the Marshall County Clerk’s Office as an accountant. She was named Honorary Auditor of the state of Indiana for 17 years of perfect audits. On November 23, 1983, Marguerite proudly became a citizen of the United States.

In their retirement years Marguerite and Jerry made their way to Sebring, Florida where Marguerite continued to live after Jerry’s passing. She moved from Sebring to St Jèrôme in 2017 where she lived in the same retirement complex as her sister Beatrice.

Marguerite was an avid reader of both French and English books and had many hobbies including crochet and watching NASCAR. She was a member of women’s auxiliaries in several social clubs. She was a very passionate and supportive matriarch for her family and lived her life full of optimism and hope. She was incredibly clever, witty, and never failed to make those around her laugh.

Preceded in death by 1 grandchild, Bekka LaPlante, she is survived by 1 sister, Beatrice Savoie; 4 children, Rolland LaPlante, Charles LaPlante, Robert LaPlante (Suzanne), and Renee Pomeroy (Steve); 9 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; a close niece, Josette Savoie, and many other nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service  will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 12:30 pm in the New Oak Hill Cemetery, 1300 Chester Street, Plymouth, IN 46563 with Life Celebrant James Smart Officiating. Following the service, all are welcome to the celebration of Marguerite’s life at the Marshall County Council on Aging at 1305 W. Harrison Street, Plymouth, Indiana from 2 to 6 pm.

We are so sorry to hear of Marguerite’s passing.
She performed our wedding ceremony almost 37 years ago.
I’m certain she must have touched many lives through her life.

I am so sorry to read about Margaret’s (as we called her) death. She started with me in the Clerk’s office and worked through both of my terms. I really enjoyed working with her, as well as playing bridge with she and Jerry. Great gal, lots of fun, and very, very, smart. I know she will be missed.

Marguerite was awesome and will be missed. I worked with her all through high school and college at the Marshall County Clerk’s Office. She was so helpful and truly cared.
