Mark L. Whitaker

Mark L. Whitaker, 64, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the people he loved.

Mark was born on December 31, 1961, in Ohio to Don and Lillian (Harper) Whitaker. He attended Plymouth High School, graduating with the Class of 1981. Shortly after, Mark proudly answered the call to serve his country, serving in the United States Army as a mechanic from 1981 to 1985. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the work he loved and spent his years as a mechanic.

Mark was a simple man in the very best sense of the word. He never needed much to be happy. He was easygoing, genuine, and fun to be around. He had a way of making people feel comfortable simply by being himself. Mark lived in the moment and found joy in the ordinary things—a good conversation, a fishing hole, an ice cream, or simply spending time with the people he loved.

He was dependable in every sense of the word. If you needed Mark, he was there. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without giving it a second thought. He helped others not for recognition, but because that was simply who he was.

Mark had a particular love for ice cream, and a Frosty from Wendy’s could always put a smile on his face. He also loved fishing. Give him a quiet fishing hole, some time, and a little patience, and he was perfectly content to let the rest of the world stand still for a while.

But more than anything, Mark loved his family. His daughters meant the world to him, and his grandchildren held an especially treasured place in his heart. He took great pride in watching them grow and cherished the time he was able to spend with them. His love for them was unconditional, steady, and immeasurable. Those who knew Mark best knew that family was everything to him.

Mark leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry his love with them. He is survived by his daughters, Sarah (Jeremy) Stoneburner of South Bend, Tonya (Alicia) Abarca-Vela of Plymouth, and Jessica Whitaker of Stratford, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Bryon Whitaker, Max Abarca, Quintin Abarca, Clayton Abarca, Mila Abarca, Gracie Whitaker, Zeke Stoneburner, Piper Stoneburner, Annabelle Wood, and Jacob Wood; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Anita Spicer, Shelley (Rick) Shafer, and Bruce (Linda) Whitaker; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lilian Whitaker; brother, Kirby Whitaker; sister, Gayle Smith; and grandson, Wyatt Stoneburner.

Burial will take place at New Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth with Military Honors at a later date.

Mark may have lived a simple life, but the love he gave was anything but small. He leaves behind the kind of memories that live on—in stories shared, fishing trips remembered, laughter around the table, a grandchild’s smile, and all the little moments that meant so much. His family will miss his presence, his steady heart, his easygoing nature, and knowing that no matter what, Mark would always be there.

He was a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and a man who loved his family deeply. He will be missed more than words can say and remembered with love for generations to come.
