Matthew Scott Owen, 61, passed away on June 16, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on July 20, 1963, at La Porte Hospital, he was the son of Howard and Joan (Ragle) Owen.

Matt proudly served in the United States Air Force for over two decades as a Security Policeman, retiring on October 1, 2002. During his military career, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, discipline, and a strong sense of duty. It was while stationed in Korea that he met the love of his life, Hye Un O. The two were married on June 5, 1987, in Seoul, ROK, and were later blessed with their son, Raymond, on September 9, 1988.

Following his military retirement, Matt continued his commitment to service through a civilian career with the Air Force. He was a devoted husband, known for his quiet strength and unwavering support. Hye Un often referred to Matt as her angel, especially during times of illness, when he cared for her with deep compassion and love.

Matt had a kind heart for animals and loved traveling across Korea with Hye Un and their pets in their beloved Mazda Miata. He was also a passionate football fan, proudly supporting the Chicago Bears. His “man cave” was filled with Bears memorabilia, a reflection of a lifelong love for the game that began in his high school playing days.

Family was the cornerstone of Matt’s life, and one of his favorite traditions was the annual rib cook-off at the Sunflower Festival — a fiercely competitive (but good-natured) battle for bragging rights filled with laughter and pride. Even when he couldn’t always be there, Matt’s son Raymond had a knack for bringing home the win.

Matt is survived by his beloved wife, Hye Un; daughter-in-law, Kaitlyn Owen; and granddaughter, Kindley. He is also remembered with love by his siblings, Karen (Garry) Poe, Sharon Owen, and Mark (Melissa) Owen; sister-in-law, Cathy Ousley; and mother-in-law, Lee, Dong Hyong Oh; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Joan Owen; his son, Raymond; and his brother, Michael Owen.

At this time, no formal services will be held. He will be remembered always for his service, kindness, and devotion to those he loved.
