Oran L. Sliter

March 24, 1929 — February 22, 2023

Oran L. Sliter, 93, peacefully passed away with his family by his beside at 6:17 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2023. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Oran was born in White County, Arkansas on March 24, 1929, to Selmer D. and Myrtle D. (Vaughan) Sliter.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged in 1956.

In the North Salem Church of God in Plymouth, Indiana, Oran married Sue Ann (Hill) Neff on June 14, 1998.

He worked for Bendix for 35 years, ending as a union steward. But retirement was not for Oran. He was also a self-taught master carpenter, electrician, and mechanic. He built his current home at the age of 82 and several others through the years.

He was a generous, kind, strong, sometimes stubborn, gentle giant. Oran was always willing to help anyone in need. He was creative, hard-working, headstrong but humble and selfless. He was proud to be part Cherokee Indian.

Oran taught his children and family to always have a sense of humor, learn patience and to walk away from a situation before you get too mad. He taught them how to treat a woman and how to be a respectful gentleman. He taught them how to forgive and to keep family important. Oran was beyond proud of the 4 generations he had created.

He owned a twin engine Cessna that he privately piloted for many years. He was a past Department Director for the former Marshall County Civil Defense and a member for over 30 years.

Sue and he raised horses for many years. He loved all animals, and that love was just as strong as the love for his family. He appreciated coffee and peanut butter cookies and toast with homemade strawberry jam. He loved listening to old country music, playing with the grandchildren on his back hoe, bird watching and always making sure his American flag was flying high and proud. He also could get caught in tv dramas like COPS and Jerry Springer, but sitting down for Oran was rare as he was a jack of all trades and master of all.

He is survived by his wife, Sue of Plymouth, and their children: Vicky (Doug) Harmon of LaPaz, Sarah (Matt) Kornblith of Monterey, Kathy (Billy) Schoff of Plymouth, Rachel (James) Edwards of LaPorte, Luke (Jennifer) Neff of Plymouth, Peter (Amy) Neff of Logansport, Adam (Jessica) Sliter of Plymouth and Michael (Sydney) Sliter of Colorado Springs, CO; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; his sister Esther Williams of Plymouth and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters-in-law: John Hill, Linda Walsh, Jim Hill, Tom Hill and Patty Moss.

Oran was preceded in death by his parents; son Ricky Lynn; brother Norman; great nephew Zeke Hutchins and great-great-granddaughter Mercedes Lain.
