Rev. Jean F. Mccan

The Rev. Jean Franklin McCan, 76, died at 10 p.m. of natural causes in his residence, the United Methodist parsonage in Hamlet, Ind., on Tuesday, October 26, 2004. Born at home in Plymouth on May 5, 1928, Jean was the son of John Donald and Edith Ellen Freese McCan. He graduated from West High School with the class of 1946. He earned his bachelors degree in Zoology from Indiana University, Bloomington, and his master’s degree in Theology from the Theological Seminary of Naperville, Illinois.
He was first married to Mildred P. Hayn of Tyner, Ind., on August 14, 1949 in Plymouth. Four children were born from that union: Midgie, Renita, James and John. He later married Sharon K. Suddarth on October 5, 1996, in Fayetteville, N.C.
Jean served as a United Methodist minister in many central and northern Indiana communities over a 40 year period. He currently served the Hamlet and Grovertown congregations of the United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed spectator sports and reading presidential biographies. He was very interested in current politics and elections. It is perhaps fitting that his funeral services will be held on Election Day; he would have liked that.
A weather watcher, he always watched the Weather Channel on television.
A member of the Hamlet Lions’ Club, he was involved in their many activities.
His wife Sharon survives his death as does his four children by his first marriage.
They are: Midgie Jeanne and Steven Harper, Lafayette, Ind.; Renita Rae Shaw, Lafayette, Ind.; James L. and Carolyn McCan, Orlando, Fla.; and John D. and Kelli McCan, Tampa, Fla.
Fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive as well.
Four step-children also survive. They are: Mialynn Roberts, Sturgis, Mich.; Jonathon Suddarth, Shipshewana, Ind.; David Suddarth, Fayetteville, N.C. and Sarah Suddarth, also of Fayetteville, N.C.
Three sisters and a brother survive Jean’s death. They are: R. June and Ralph Schaal, Plymouth, Ind.; Joyce Morris, Plymouth, Ind.; Lynette and Paul Hartman, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Larry and Barbara McCan, Plymouth, Ind. Hazel McCan, a sister-in-law of Knox also survives.
Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Jean was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Delmar McCan.
The family will welcome visitors at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Monday, November 1, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m., and for one hour prior to funeral services on Tuesday.
The funeral services at the funeral home will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2004, at 11 a.m., the Rev. Dr. David A. Schrader, Superintendent of the United Methodist North Indiana Conference will officiate.
Interment will follow in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Jean’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
