Lakeville

Rex A. Hummel, 72, peacefully went home to the Lord on December 11, 2025. Born in South Bend on April 9, 1953, Rex was the son of Clyde and Margaret (Berry) Hummel.

Rex was a proud graduate of LaVille High School, Class of 1972. On September 26, 1975, he married Theresa Tokarz at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Knox. Although Rex did not grow up in the Catholic faith, he made a heartfelt promise to God to raise his children, Angie and Adam, within this tradition. In a significant step of faith, Rex was baptized in Christ shortly before his passing, embracing the Catholic Church.

Living an active lifestyle, Rex was always tinkering around doing something. In the summertime, he loved mowing his lawn or hosting a hog roast and when the weather would change come winter, he found joy in plowing snow around LaPaz. He was the self-proclaimed “Mayor of LaPaz” and enjoyed his daily visit to the coffee shop. Rex spent time at the American Legion in LaPaz and was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge in Plymouth.

Rex held a dedicated career as a laborer with AM General for over 30 years before his retirement in 2003.

He was lighthearted by nature and was known as the family jokester, always teasing those he loved. Rex had one of the kindest hearts and would do anything for someone in need. One of Rex’s proudest moments in life was when he became a grandfather; he loved attending his grandson’s sporting events and rarely missed a game.

Rex will be missed by his wife of 50 years, Theresa; children, Angie and Adam Hummel; grandson, Jonathan Brunjes; siblings, Carol Dove and Diane Herschberger; Theresa’s siblings, Chester, Dan (Brenda), Tim, Julian, Andy, Tony, Patty (Ralph) and Susie (Bob); along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Margaret; siblings, Joan, Becky, Carl, Bonnie, Jerry, Gwen, Sandra, and Wes; son-in-law, Jonathan Brunjes, Sr; and in-laws, Chester and Bernice Tokarz along with their sons, Jerome and Michael.

A Celebration of Life will be held during the Summer of 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the Center for Hospice Care, 1419 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth, IN 46563.
