Richard K. Schafer

November 29, 1939 — May 12, 2012

Richard K. Schafer, 72, of Mishawaka, passed away following a cancer related illness in the Hospice House of St. Joseph County at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012. He was a former resident of Plymouth and the Niles, Michigan area.

Richard was born the son of Jacob J. and Anna K. (Dies) Schafer on November 29, 1939 in Sterling, Colorado and was baptized into the Lutheran Faith.

He was a member of the LaPaz High School Class of 1957. In his mid-fifties he returned to school and attained a Community College Degree in Marketing. Throughout his life he was a skilled finish carpenter and had worked with the Kent Reese Construction Co. in Plymouth.

He enjoyed landscaping and was particularly proud of his rose gardening and volunteered his time and talent with a community garden in Michigan.

Richard is survived by his mother, Anna Schafer of Ft. Myers, FL, two children and four grandchildren. His son Brent A. (Sherry) Schafer and their children; Drew (Brie) Schafer and Blaine Schafer and his daughter Jane E. (Brian) Chupp and their children; Colin Chupp and Lauren Chupp. Two brothers also survive; Kenneth G. (Kathleen) Schafer of Mishawaka and Donald J. (Gail) Schafer of Ft. Myers, FL along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, and a brother, Ronald K. Schafer.

A memorial service will be held in the New Oakhill Cemetery Chapel in Plymouth on Friday, May 18th at 11 a.m. Pastor Steven Resner will preside. The family will receive friends in the Chapel from 10 – 11 a.m. prior to services. Burial will follow in the New Oakhill Cemetery.
