Stefan ‘Steve’ I. Benkic, 79, an Australian immigrant who has resided in the Plymouth area since 1956 has died.  Steve resided at 109 Gideon Street, Plymouth.  He died following an extended illness at 7:05 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2000 in the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth Campus.

Born on a farm in Hungary on March 10, 1921, Steve was the son of Stefan and Mary Susan Kolosa Benkic.  As a young boy, Steve experienced the hardships and sacrifices known to many at that time.  He attended school in Austria.

On January 15, 1949, in Graz, Austria, Steve and Sophia Menapace were married.  Sophia died on April 25, 1986.   Following their marriage, Steve and his bride were sponsored by a family west of Plymouth and came to the United States.  Later they became citizens and Steve was quite proud to have a job with Bremen Bearing as a machine operator and support his family.  After 33 years of employment, Steve retired in 1986.

Steve is survived by a nephew, Reinhard Gomboc and his wife Brigitte, of Graz, Austria.  He made many friends, including those who have helped Steve remain at home in recent years.

Friends may gather from 6 – 7 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2000 in the Johnson – Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth.  A tribute service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.  The Rev. Charles Krieg will officiate.

In following Steve’s wishes, cremation will take place and his ashes returned to Austria and buried with his dear Sophia.

Memorial gifts in Steve’s name may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
