Tiofilo L. Mata

Tiofilo L. Mata, 62, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Born on August 20, 1963, in LaPorte, Indiana, he was the son of Marcelino and Maria (Langoria) Mata. In 1989, he married Penny K. Smith, who preceded him in death on January 6, 2000.

Tiofilo was a man who was always on the move. He took pride in being neat, organized, and attentive to every detail of his life. He enjoyed fishing, never missed a Notre Dame football game, and was a tremendous cook—especially when it came to making tacos.

To his family, Tiofilo was an amazing and strong-willed man who fought tirelessly, especially for those he loved. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, and who adored him in return.

He is survived by his children, Ashley Marie Mata of Charleston, Illinois; Allison Nicole (Andrew) Olivarez of Plymouth; Lachandra Lynn Mata of Bourbon; and Dylan Dean (Ashlee) Mata of Plymouth. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Isabella, Nevaeh, Gavin, Maddix, Kenyon, Alexa, Juelz, Andrew Jr., Kingston, Angelo, and Janaya; his siblings, Marcelino (Lois) Mata Jr., Isabel Mata, and Viola Mata; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-laws: Crystal and Tanya.

Tiofilo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Penny; his siblings, Jose, Juanita, Sylvia, George, Maximino, Ricardo, and Diana; his granddaughter, Angel.

In accordance with the family's wishes, services will be held at a later date.
