Tunis C. Ross, Jr.

August 25, 1913 — March 29, 2000

Tunis C. Ross, Jr., 86, a resident of Plymouth for many years coming from Detroit, Mich.,  died on Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at 1 p.m. at his home, 1010 Ferndale Ave., Plymouth.

A soft-spoken gentleman with impeccable manners, he will be missed by his many friends.

Tunis was born in Detroit, Mich., on August 25, 1913, the son of Tunis C. Sr. and Freda Farnau Ross.  He graduated from a Detroit high school in 1931.  In 1936 he earned a degree in Engineering from the University of Michigan.

During World War II, Tunis was a Lt. Colonel in the Signal Corps. of the United States Army.

He worked as an engineer with the McCord Corp., retiring in the early 1970’s.

Tunis was an avid yachtsman.  He lived on his yacht in Florida waters in the wintertime.  He was a past Commander of the South Bend Power Squadron and enjoyed charting unknown waters as a service to sailors everywhere.

He was active in Big Brothers, loved to travel (especially by water) and was a member of the Plymouth Rotary Club.

Tunis is survived by three cousins: Betty Ross, Plymouth, Ind., Karen Barker, Mishawaka, Ind., and Barbara Yasson, Vancouver, Wash.

Friends may visit with Tunis’ family on Saturday, April 1, 2000, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

A memorial service will take place, following visitation, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home.  The Rev. Les Johnson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Tunis was a member, will officiate at the funeral.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Marshall County.
