Virginia Ruth Spencer

February 4, 1930 — June 16, 2025

Plymouth

Virginia “Ginger” Ruth (Nitcher) Spencer, age 95, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, surrounded by her family. A proud U.S. Marine and a woman of unwavering strength, Virginia lived boldly, loved deeply, and never hesitated to speak her mind.

Born on February 4, 1930, Virginia enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during a time when few women served. She carried that same courage and determination with her throughout her life—standing up not only for herself, but for others as well. Her voice was steady, her convictions strong, and her presence unforgettable.

Virginia had a curious mind and a generous heart. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures: reading, watching the news, and keeping up with basketball—always ready with sharp insights and strong opinions. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family over a good cup of coffee, tending to her flowers, and occasionally trying her luck at the casino. Her warmth, wit, and fierce independence were hallmarks of a life fully lived.

She is survived by her children, Stephen Spencer of Mishawaka, Susan (Greg) Huff of Plymouth, and daughter-in-law Linda Spencer of Plymouth; grandchildren Holly Heller, Brandon Rogers, Angela Huff, Kristen Fehrer, Dustin Milton, Stephen Spencer, Sam Spencer, Shanda Spencer, and Andrea Spencer; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Samuel I. Spender; parents, Bina and Lula Nitcher; sons, John Spencer and Michael Spencer; and daughter-in-law Diane Spencer; along with siblings, George, Jeanette, Martha, Betty, Goldie, and Lula.

Visitation will be held at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan Street in Plymouth, Indiana, on Friday, June 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST, with a funeral service immediately following at 1:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Semper Fi. Once a Marine, always a Marine.
